Hyundai just surprised everyone at the 2026 New York Auto Show by revealing the Boulder Concept. This isn’t your typical city SUV. It is a rugged, “body-on-frame” beast designed for serious off-roading.

For years, Hyundai has focused on smooth family cars, but the Boulder proves they are finally ready to challenge legends like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota 4Runner.
Built Like a Tank (Art of Steel)
Hyundai is calling its new design language “Art of Steel.” The car looks like a solid block of metal with a “Liquid Titanium” finish. It has a very boxy, tough shape that gives the driver a great view of the road (and the rocks) ahead

Cool Exterior Features:
Massive Tyres: It sits on huge 37-inch mud-terrain tyres. This means it can go through deep mud and over big rocks without breaking a sweat.

Safari Windows: There are extra windows on the roof (Safari-style) so passengers can look up at the mountains or the sky.
Smart Doors: It features “coach doors” (doors that open from the center) making it very easy to jump in and out of the cabin.
Double-Hinged Tailgate: The back door can open from either the left or right side. Plus, the rear glass can slide down automatically if you need to carry long items like surfboards or ladders.

Tech That Helps You Off-Road
Inside, Hyundai didn’t just put a giant iPad. They kept things practical with
Physical Buttons: Instead of hiding everything in a screen, there are real knobs and buttons. This is great when you are driving on bumpy roads and need to change settings quickly.

Digital Spotter: This is a cool software that acts like a “helper.” It watches the ground in real-time and tells the driver exactly where to place the wheels on dangerous paths.

Work from Anywhere: The interior has fold-out tray tables, so you can set up a laptop or have a meal in the middle of the forest.
When Can You Buy One?
This Boulder Concept is the first look at a new platform that Hyundai will use for a midsize pickup truck by 2030, followed by an SUV.

The most interesting part? Hyundai plans to build these vehicles entirely in the USA using American steel. While it’s aimed at the US market for now, the tech and design might eventually influence the rugged SUVs we see in other parts of the world.
